Oregon Woman Likely Killed by Cougar in Oregon's First Wild Attack

"Can it happen? Yes. Does it happen? ah boy. It's not very often."
Sergeant Kim Chandler with the Department of Fish and Wildlife says the chances of being attacked by a cougar are phenomenal but what is so rare became reality when SJ Brooks died after a cougar attack near North Bend in May.
The case is the second on record in Washington in the last century and now Oregon has an investigation of its own.

"Yesterday afternoon we recovered the body of Diana Bober." A police said.
Bober was found on a hiking trail.
"It was determined she died from an apparent animal attack. Her injuries are indicative of what experts believed to be that of a cougar." The police added.

If confirmed it would be Oregon's first fatal cougar attack in the wild. The search is on for the animal.
"This is extremely rare, wherever you are in the country. It has happened in other states." A police said.
When it happened here in May, the cougar was found and an investigation followed.
"I think the necropsy report on that cat showed nothing wrong with him whatsoever. Everybody expected to see some kind of brain tumor or you know worms or something that would drive him to that behavior. That just wasn't so." Sergeant Kim Said.

With unanswered questions in Washington and another case under review in Oregon, Sergeant Chandler knows it can spark fear.
"The question always is should I be afraid to do these outdoor activities and participate in mountain biking and hiking? I would say absolutely don't give up those things." Sergeant Chandler added.
Instead he recommends being more aware and always ready.
"The bear spray works great on bear as well if you're going to be outdoors, doing these outdoor activities you have to be prepared for anything." Sergeant Chandler added.

Massachusetts woman says DNA tests confirm mountain lion

PETERSHAM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts woman whose horse was injured in June says DNA testing has confirmed that a mountain lion visited her property.

The cats are rare in Massachusetts. The state has confirmed just two reports in the past 20 years.

Anne Marie Zukowski, of Petersham, tells The Telegram & Gazette her horse suffered two large gashes on its shoulder. State wildlife officials investigated and determined the horse was injured when it scraped against a gate latch, not in an animal attack.

Zukowski says she collected hair and blood samples from a fence on her property and sent it to Florida for testing. The geneticist who did the tests thinks the horse may have been frightened by a mountain lion.

Police say there have been no reported mountain lion sightings in town.
