Cara Paling Mudah Menyusun Reported Yes / No Questions

Pada postingan sebelumnya kita telah membahas tentang cara membuat kalimat tanya Yes / No Questions, dan pada kesempatan kali ini saya ingin berbagi materi tentang cara paling mudah menyusun reported Yes / No Questions.
Materi ini merupakan bagian dari materi reported speech. Reported speech dikenal juga sebagai Indirect speech atau jika diterjemahkan kita dapat memahaminya sebagai kalimat tidak langsung.
Kalimat tidak langsung sendiri adalah kalimat yang diucapkan oleh seseorang yang disampaikan kembali oleh orang yang berbeda kepada orang lain. Ada berbagai macam kalimat tidak langsung tapi untuk kesempatan kali ini kita akan fokus pada kalimat tanya tidak langsung atau Reported Yes / No Questions.

Ada beberapa hal yang harus diperhatikan pada saat kita ingin merubah kalimat tanya langsung menjadi kalimat tanya tidak langsung dalam bentuk Yes / No Questions (Reported Yes / No Questions).
Hal-hal yang harus diperhatikan adalah:

1. Perubahan bentuk Tenses.

Pada saat kita merubah kalimat langsung menjadi kalimat tidak langsung terutama dalam bentuk kalimat tanya, struktur kalimatnya akan berubah, termasuk bentuk tensesnya.
Berikut adalah perubahan tenses dari kalimat langsung menjadi kalimat tidak langsung.

KALIMAT LANGSUNG - KALIMAT TIDAK LANGSUNG
Simple Present Tense - Simple Past Tense
Present Continuous - Past Continuous
Present Perfect - Past Perfect
Simple Past Tense - Past Perfect
Present Perfect Continuous - Past Perfect Continuous
Past Continuous - Past Perfect Continuous
Simple Future Tense - Past Future Tense

Kalimat yang mengandung Modals
Will - Would
Must, Have to - Had to
May - Could, Might
Shall - Would / Should
May - Might
Can - Could


2. Perubahan Personal Pronoun (Kata ganti orang)

Harus diperhatikan juga bahwa Personal Pronoun (kata ganti orang) mengalami perubahan dari bentuk kalimat langsung menjadi kalimat tidak langsung.

3. Perubahan Adverb (Kata keterangan)

Beberapa jenis Adverb (kata keterngan) mengalami perubahan dari kalimat langsung menjadi kalimat tidak langsung.

KALIMAT LANGSUNG - KALIMAT TIDAK LANGSUNG
Now - Then / at that moment
Today - That day
Tomorrow - The following day / The next day / a day later
Yesterday - The previous day / The day before
Last week - The week before / The previous week
Last month - The month before / The previous month
Last year - The year before / The previous year
Next week - The week later / The following week
Next month - The month later / The following month
Next year - The year later / The following year
Here - There
This - That


Sedangkan pola atau rumus yang digunakan untuk menyusun Reported Yes / No Questions adalah:
(SUBJECT PRONOUN) ASKED (OBJECT PRONOUN) + IF / WHETHER + SUBJECT + TO BE / VERB + OBJECT
perubahan rumus tersebut mungkin terjadi tergantung dari tenses yang digunakan terutama pada bagian To be / Verb

Catatan:
Penggunaan If / Whether memiliki persamaan dalam makna.
Perbedaannya hanya pada tingkat keformalannya. Whether lebih formal daripada If.
Sedangkan If lebih sering atau paling umum digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari.


Berikut ini adalah contoh perubahan kalimat tanya langsung menjadi kalimat tanya tidak langsung / Reported Yes / No Questions dalam berbagai bentuk tenses.

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE - SIMPLE PAST TENSE

She asks me: "Do you eat my cake?"
She asked me if I ate her cake.

He asks Zia: "Does Iqbal go to school today?"
He asked Zia whether Iqbal went to school that day.

Shani asks: "Is it your hat?"
Shani asked me whether it was my hat.

Arman asks: "Are you a guitarist?"
Arman asked me if I was a guitarist.


PRESENT CONTINUOUS - PAST CONTINUOUS

She is asking me: "Are you eating my cake?"
She was asking me if I was eating her cake.

He is asking Zia: "Is Iqbal going to school today?"
He was asking Zia whether Iqbal was going to school that day.

Shani is asking: "Is she looking at you?"
Shani was asking me whether she was looking at me.

Arman is asking: "Are they finishing their job?"
Arman was asking me if they were finishing their job.


PRESENT PERFECT - PAST PERFECT

She has asked me: "Have you eaten my cake?"
She had asked me if I had eaten her cake.

He has asked Zia: "Has Iqbal gone to school?"
He had asked Zia whether Iqbal had gone to school.

Shani has asked: "Has it been your hat?"
Shani had asked me whether it had been my hat.

Arman has asked: "Have you been a guitarist?"
Arman had asked me if I had been a guitarist.


SIMPLE PAST TENSE - PAST PERFECT

She asked me: "Did you eat my cake?"
She had asked me if I had eaten her cake.

He asked Zia: "Did Iqbal go to school yesterday?"
He had asked Zia whether Iqbal had gone to school the previous day. 

Shani asked: "Was it your hat?"
Shani has asked me whether it had been my hat.

Arman asked: "Were you a guitarist?"
Arman had asked me if I had been a guitarist.


PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS - PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

She has been asking me: "Have you been eating my cake?"
She had been asking me if I had been eating her cake.

He has been asking Zia: "Has Iqbal been going to school?"
He had been asking Zia if Iqbal had been going to school.

Shani has been asking: "Has she been looking at you?"
Shani had been asking me whether she had been looking at me.

Arman has been asking: "Have they been finishing their job?"
Arman had been asking me if they had been finishing their job.


PAST CONTINUOUS - PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

She was asking me: "Were you eating my cake?"
She had been asking me if I had been eating her cake.

He was asking Zia: "Was Iqbal going to school yesterday?"
He had been asking Zia if Iqbal had been going to school the previous day.

Shani was asking: "Was she looking at you?"
Shani had been asking me whether she had been looking at me.

Arman was asking: "Were they finishing their job?"
Arman had been asking me if they had been finishing their job.


SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE - PAST FUTURE TENSE

She will ask me: "Will you eat my cake?"
She would ask me if I would eat her cake.

He will ask Zia: "Will Iqbal go to school tomorrow?"
He would ask Zia if Iqbal would go to school the following day.

Shani will ask: "Will it be your hat?"
Shani would ask me whether it would be my hat.

Arman will ask: "Will you be a guitarist?"
Arman would ask me if I would be a guitarist.


MODALS

Ria asks: "Must I visit him?"
Ria asked me if She had to visit him.

Ryan asks her: "May I sit here?"
Ryan asked her whether he could sit there.

She asks me: "Shall we solve our problem?"
She asked me if we would solve our problem.

He asks me: "May I be your partner?"
He asked me if he might be my partner.

My mom asks my sister: "Can you cook pasta?"
My mom asked her whether she could cook pasta.
